CMS Star Ratings Matter: In-Home Test Kits for Improved Preventive Care Screenings

Applies to: Medicare Markets

At Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL), we know that our Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Star Ratings are an important consideration for consumers when shopping for health plans or deciding whether to stay with one. Member survey responses and member screening participation rates both impact our Star Ratings.

We have several initiatives in place to ensure that our members have positive experiences with BCBSIL, such as the ability to participate in the in-home test kit program and our Rewards and Incentives Program.

BCBSIL has partnered with Home Access Health Corporation to offer in-home test kits at no charge for select Blue Cross Medicare AdvantageSM members. The goal is to make it easy for members to complete the tests in the comfort of their own homes. First, members receive a letter from BCBSIL with information about the health screening. Then, they are sent the in-home test kit to complete.

Members* were sent letters  from BCBSIL about diabetes (MAU and A1c) and colorectal (FIT) test kits. Members may opt out of the testing, but it is highly recommended that they participate. Members will be sent test kits specific to their needs, so they may only receive one kit or a combination of kits. Members who have not opted out of the program will be mailed kits in early August.

Here are some ways you can help BCBSIL achieve our highest Star Ratings possible:

The higher our Star Ratings, the easier it is for you to sell BCBSIL plans and retain your current clients.
